I am so thrilled to share that, as of today, my first client book is out and on shelves everywhere books are sold—Kalla Harris’s brilliant YA dark and snarky dystopian vampire book The Ground That Devours Us.
First, like, buy it already! 😂
I’m serious, though. This book is everything. I read it in, like, 24 hours. Kalla was part of my very first batch of queries back in February 2024, and I devoured her book like I was the thirsty vampire.
Here’s the jacket copy!

The world ended ten years ago.
Vampires showed up, took over, and turned the whole planet into their personal all-you-can-drink buffet. The president? Bloodsucker. The government? Bloodsuckers. My social life? Absolutely nonexistent.
But hey, at least I had one thing going for me―slayer training. My twin sister, Ripley, and I were about to go pro, officially joining the ranks of the last people on earth who actually do something about the whole “undead overlords” situation.
And then X had to show up. The vampire boogeyman. The worst of the worst. And instead of killing Ripley, like any decent monster would, he turned her. Now she’s technically a vamp, but something tells me my sister is still in there. Which means I can’t slay her.
What can I do? Break every rule. Lie to my friends. Strike a deal with the most dangerous vampire on the planet: X will protect Ripley from everyone else who wants her dead―like, really dead―until I can snag the cure for vampirism. The catch? Risking my own head to help him free his good-for-nothing BFF from the very slayers who taught me everything.
If I want Ripley back, I’m going to have to play nice with the thing that ruined my life. And the worst part?
I think he’s enjoying this.

Also, I want to say, I have never seen such strong across-the-board reviews for a book—it’s like everybody who reads it immediately becomes a superfan or something. Like, consistently 5 stars. Here are just a few of the early read reviews!:
Just for fun, this is literally a picture of me reading her full MS in my car on March 6th 2024! (ONE OF THE OG SUPERFANS)
Our offer call, March 8th 2024, was amazing. Here are some pics from right after the call, because let me tell you—I absolutely fell in love with Kalla during that conversation!!!!

Fast forward three weeks—or was it four— (of TORTURE)… and Kalla was my first query inbox offer that turned into a YES. I had just come off two rejections (for my first two offers ever) and was quickly realizing, Oh, this is the absolute worst.
So when Kalla said yes, I nearly lost my mind… and then promptly wrote a Substack about it. Also, Kalla wins an award for her email acceptance subject line, which nearly gave me a heart attack (a good one though):
(Ruby is our intrepid vampire slayer, Ripley is her sister who gets turned, and X is the hotttt vampire of my dreams)
Did I cry? Hell yes I did. The whole email was so lovely. Also shout-out to Kalla’s dad, who I’ve never met but love dearly and would die for, obvi.
I knew Kalla had multiple offers, but it was only when we were speaking months and months later that she mentioned who else had offered. I won’t share here, but damn there were some big agents at play (more than one👀) and it astounds me to this day that she chose me. In fact, after she disclosed their names during that casual convo all that time later, I nearly had a panic attack because I realized how easily I could have lost her. It was a weird anxiety-in-reverse moment, which makes no sense except that I assure you it was quite real. (Side note—I have lost other authors I’ve offered on to one of these agents in particular—I’ve got my eye on her 😂👀) (also she’s big and I’m small so I’m pretty sure she has no idea who I am 😂).
Anyway!!! When Kalla signed with me, obviously champagne came out.

Fast forward through the book deal and all the pre-publication ups and downs of the past however-many months, and here we are, nearly a year and a half after I started agenting, and her book is OUT. It’s my first client book to be out in the world, and it feels momentous. Amazing. Incredible. I actually can’t stop smiling.
I can’t help but look back to January 2024, when I had just accepted an offer from Storm and was doing onboarding and training for my new role as an agent, but couldn’t talk about it yet, and wouldn’t open to queries for another 3 or so weeks. Here’s what I posted way back then:
I wish that girl could’ve seen where we’d be less than 18 months later. It’s been an incredible ride—and we’re just getting started.
Congratulations- am very much liking the sound of that book - the premise= ah-may-zing & and a delicious cover! Whoot whoot!
Congrats!!! The novel sounds delicious — looking forward to reading it.
