So helpful! As an upcoming debut author, I often feel pressured to be doing EVERYTHING under the sun to get the word out about me as an author and my book leading up to launch day...and pressured to write book #2 at the same time!--so I feel pulled in so many directions. It's very smart to know that I should focus on doing a few core things WELL rather ALL THE THINGS only 10%. Love your Substack, Jenna!!
I'm a sucker for an interesting weblink so I clicked on the mention of "Flublishing." I then binged the first season while I was on my evening walks. The episodes were interesting and entertaining. Can I count them as at least tangential to my "One Thing?"
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!! What a GREAT topic and proverbial kick-in-the-pants!! I have been mulling for some time over the “one thing“ principal as applied to my art and art business which languishes as we try to finish getting this old house ready to sell… so far a 4 month delay in embarking on said art & art business! Thanks for this resource and reminder. You have full permission to ask me how I am coming on synthesizing with that “one thing” should be.
This sounds like the choice that serves your authors best, and that's a good thing. Without focus on One Thing, other things can fall apart. I focused on a One Thing Bundle™️ these past months: finish my fourth draft and submit for a manuscript assessment before the Atlanta Writers Conference. I barely made it in time. This week I'm tackling all my half-finished DIY projects before we host a social on Friday!
I love this post so much! I'm currently querying a YA novel and I feel like there's sooo much that goes along with that: the actual queries, the research, building a social media presence (yuck), creating a website. It's so easy to get distracted by ALL THE THINGS you need to do, but most don't really move you closer to the big goal of getting published. Querying is so draining, too, so I think I need to focus on 'The One Thing' of getting new words down in my next story. Thanks for the reminder!

🥰🥰🥰
I feel this so much! Don't you wish being an author was just writing books and not thinking about all the other bits? :)
I'm tempted to write a long comment about how valuable I found this Substack entry, but I need to get back to working on book #2.
😂😂😂 good call

haha absolutely! (and glad you enjoyed!)
Love this post and Deya's video. Already shared it with a friend and adding The One Thing to my TBD!
